Lemberg (Lviv) Family Books

Lemberg Family Book cover

It was about five years ago now since I was lucky enough to hear a lecture by Joshua Grayson about the Lwow Family Book during the Gesher Galicia Symposium which was held in Warsaw.

At the time we were aware of a single incomplete set of books that are held by The Historical Archive in Lviv and can be found online via FamilySearch. These are incredibly difficult to read and I am extremely lucky for Joshua’s help in tackling them.

Today I visited the National Library of Israel where three such books can be found. After viewing them I have a few things to mention.

1. The books in Israel cover family numbers 2400 – 3200

2. This copy is much more legible

3. This copy includes information not found in the set available online – this includes house number and klasse

4. The information on the families may differ

5. When family numbers were reused you may not find details for the reuse

With this in mind I have just one conclusion: There is a second set of these books in existence and we must find it!

If you wish to learn more about this resource I would suggest you read Joshua’s article: Family Evidence Books: Treasure Trove of Galician Genealogy | Lost Roots blog (lostrootsfamilyhistory.com)
